  18. <p>     For the past year, the leftist Farabundo Marti National
  19. Liberation Front has been itching for a rematch with El
  20. Salvador's U.S.-trained armed forces. Last year thousands of
  21. FMLN fighters nearly overran the capital, San Salvador, before
  22. the army's superior firepower inflicted heavy casualties on the
  23. rebels. Last week the FMLN launched a minioffensive in 10 of the
  24. country's 14 departments but scored no major victories.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>     Officials estimated that 200 civilians and fighters were
  27. killed, and more than 300 were wounded throughout the country.
  28. The FMLN leadership views such muscle flexing as a bargaining
  29. chip in U.N.-mediated negotiations with the government to end
  30. the decade-old civil war.
